Designer Con Preview 1

Geodraxus returns at Designer Con next week in his 5th official iteration! It's hard to believe the original wax sculpt was introduced over 4 years ago! Really excited to show what else will be debuting next week along side this Prismirian hero. More to come!

Early Stages 3

Over the years I have learned that the gesture of a toy is a very instrumental part of having a "good" figure in your hands. Even some of the most intensely sculpted figures can lack this very essential aspect. It needs to hit all the marks for me personally or else I wouldn't want to play with it.

In the early stages of fleshing out the Raptinok, I was entertaining the idea of having this figure portray a stance akin to a Raptor. The Raptinok in the beginning had a more fierce and heroic stance (what he is currently sporting now) which I liked better in the end. It is important to see it both ways sometimes. Every one of my figures go through countless stages before I reach the final product. This includes many revisions to design, engineering, scale, you name it. I will make prototypes and let them resonate for a little while to get the general feel for a certain design. At the end of the day, I need to be happy with it before I let it out in the world. As we say in the sheet metal business - "You are only as good as your worst employee". I feel the same way with my toys!

Anyway, enough of my toy making babbling, thought you might like some more behind the scenes stuff.

Early Stages 2

During the production of the Mecha Treeborgs I started in on the Raptinok sculpt. Last year I was influenced by many different toy companies who happen to all be producing some sort of Dino toys. What really did it for me and pushed me to the Raptinoks was Imaginext's Dino Mech figure. It hit all the marks from the core sculpt down to the paint apps and removable armor. I could not stop marveling over this guy!

Above is a sketch study from Matt Doughty. After I started getting the design down and piecing together the figure, Matt helped me visualize a good stance and possible articulation for this guy. Something heroic yet menacing was the outcome of his study. As I have probably said before, almost every project goes back and forth between Matt and myself at one point or another. Whether its engineering, basic design principles, or general thoughts, Matt is there to help me make these toys even better than before. I am truly lucky to have him in my corner!

Here is an early prototype version of the the Raptinok figure. It went through numerous revisions before its final stage. Over the next few days we will be looking at the early development of this Dino!

Back In Action

The past few months have been a little rough over here at Spaced Out Design. While there has been mostly silence here on the web, I have been designing and producing new toys behind the scenes at a good pace. I am happy to say that the next few launches will be debuting some neat new characters into the Spaced Out Universe. Some of them will be familiar faces from years past and some all new. Keep an eye out for a release in the near future. As always, thanks again for all your support and input throughout all of these projects!

Cranking Away

Hey everyone! Sorry for the lack of Spaced Out content and or updates, been chipping away at the latest assortment of figures at the shop. Still trying to find a good balance between it all, but rest assured that new product and content is coming to those of you that are looking to explore a new section of the universe! Its been a very interesting transition from casting in urethane and mold making to manufacturing 3D printed figures. Let me say that in the many years I spent making molds and casting, 3D printing takes the cake on the labor load! Hah! I find it is more labor intensive post printed parts, but the end results are very satisfying and rewarding. Just to give a ballpark idea of the time it takes to make a Spaced Out toy; every figure can take up to 12-15 hours just to make one complete. This includes printing time, clean-up and scraping each surface, prepping for acetone, vapor bathing, tooling and assembling. This does not include things like: overnight cure for acetone vapor bathing and or painting/customizing. Needless to say, it takes awhile and your hands are into these guys a lot!

Above are some shots from the shop in the clean-up stage. Back to work!
(Yes, I tried taking a panoramic shot)

New Phases

Welcome to the new Spaced Out Design site!

I have been extremely busy behind the scenes developing a whole new Glyos compatible 3D printed toy line that will be debuting this year at Designer Con ! Its been equal parts fun and painful working through the tricks of 3D printing, but it certainly feels rewarding in the end. Over the next week leading up to Designer Con, I will be posting the new toy line in full force that will be available at the show and online after.

As far as the story I am telling goes, I am shifting things from Prismiria and Geodraxus to focus on Acris. This mechanical space engineer has some fun things in store I think! The whole site has now been outfitted to portray the new mechanical universe we are entering!

Huge thanks to Marcus for making the website top notch! We both have been working hard to make this site unique and his influence certainly bleeds through here. Thanks again Brother!

For now, check out the new layout of the site! The new Vault section has an archive of past releases from online and conventions. At the new Files section, you can find view able/printable blueprints from Acris himself! Also, the Shop will be returning full force post Designer Con .

Thanks for checking the latest bits out, more pictures will be surfacing soon with some reveals!
